CLIFF FACE, MASLINS BAY

Thick, textured oil paint gives the surface a weathered, almost sculptural quality, suggesting erosion by wind and sea. Rather than a literal depiction, the work seeks to capture the essence of the landscape—its history, movement, and the passage of time embedded in the earth.

ATHENA ARCHETYPICAL

Greek mythology provides the foundational language and symbolic framework for modern psychology, particularly through the lens of psychoanalysis and archetypal studies. Early psychologists used these stories not just as allegories, but as tools to map the deepest layers of the mind and soul.

It seemed fitting that Martha Augoustinos, a professor of psychology, be portrayed as Athena. Unlike the chaotic war deity Ares, Athena embodies disciplined warfare, practical intelligence, and the civilised order of the city. 

In this portrayal she is older and wiser, disillusioned and disappointed.

HARRIET AND HAIDEE, SWEET SIXTEEN

The Sun Blessed Collection shows a group of portraits where I have placed the sitter/s in imagined, simplified settings that suggest the perfect-idealised holiday. Brightly coloured scenes encase these beautiful people, all people I know, they are real and not imagined, unlike the swimming pools, palm trees, parties and sun-drenched environments they inhabit. Life is a joy and no problems exist here.

THE VENICE COLLECTION

Basilica Venezia, Oil on Canvas, 122x102cm, 2024 - SOLD

On a recent visit to Venice I witnessed the Basilica of San Marco in all its blinding, sunlit, water-reflected magnificence.  I wanted to paint how it seemed to appear then disappear because of the blinding sun intensified by the reflecting high water.

Inspired by Giacomo Manzù’s bronze Cardinale housed at Ca’ Pesaro, Venice. This sculpture was severely damaged in the 2019 Aqua Alta floods and was only just restored when I saw him. I could imagine him bobbing up and down along the Grand Canal. The sleek lines and aerodynamic flow of the sculpture as well as its stern authority caught my eye and I just had to paint him.

When I think of Venice I often think of it in Pink. The Tuscan and Coral Pinks of its Venetian Gothic Architecture and of course the rose glass in its Art Nuevo styled lamp posts. Often a pink sunset appears and reflects in its canals and watery walk ways. Its elegant decaying structures encased in crimson hues.
