Painting from Art History - Modigliani

ART HISTORY WORKSHOP #2

MODIGLIANI

Nu couché (Red Nude)

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) Nu couché painted 1917, oil on canvas, 60 x 92cm. Private collection of Liu Yiqian (housed/displayed at the Long Museum in Shanghai)

AMEDEO MODIGLIANI (1884-1920)

This painting is one of a famous series of nudes that Amedeo Modigliani painted in 1917. It is believed to have been included in Modigliani's first and only art show in 1917, at the Galerie Berthe Weill, which was shut down by the police… how scandalous!

Amedeo Modigliani’s paintings radiate with uniqueness due to his specific way of portraying the subjects. A long oval head with small facial features, and specifically almond-shaped empty eyes, along with an elongated body and somber tones, make his works instantly recognizable. Although he was an Italian-Jewish artist, he spent most of his career in France, where his art was often linked to Cubism and related to the stylized masks of African, Egyptian, and Asian cultures. He struggled to gain recognition during his lifetime, but after his death in 1920, his work found the fame and admiration it had long been denied.

During the course of the workshop I will demonstrate how to go about painting this work, lead you through colour mixing and paint application. We will paint the work together step-by-step.
